The Anthony M. Kennedy American Inn of Court welcomes a number of new members each program year, which runs from September through November, and January through May. The Kennedy Inn seeks diversity in membership--including the nature and size of legal practice, years of experience, and community involvement--so that our members have the benefit of varying experiences and perspectives in the practice of law.

Membership requires a commitment of time and enthusiasm. The Kennedy Inn is divided into eight teams, each with the responsibility to create a program relating to ethics, civility, and professionalism in the practice of law. At a minimum, each team includes one judge, two senior attorneys, two mid-career attorneys, two recently admitted attorneys and two students. Team members meet each month--in the morning prior to a work day, at lunch, or after work hours--to develop the team's program, which is then presented to the entire Kennedy Inn membership following a dinner on the third Tuesday of the month. Each team is assigned a particular month for its program. Experience has shown that, although program development requires work, it is an enjoyable experience that creates lasting friendships. In addition to their participation in team meetings, members are expected to attend the monthly dinner and program because the success of the Kennedy Inn and a major benefit it provides to members comes from the discussion of issues raised during a program presentation.

Applications for membership are solicited beginning in March, with a deadline of May 15.

An applicant must send a letter and resume to membership committee chair, Ann Taylor Schwing via email (aschwing@mhalaw.com) or to:

      Ann Taylor Schwing
      McDonough Holland & Allen
      555 Capitol Mall
      Ninth Floor
      Sacramento, CA 95814

The letter should include the applicant's reason for wanting to join the Kennedy Inn. References are not necessary but are encouraged (especially from current or former members of the Inn).

New members are selected by the end of May, and the September and October teams work over the summer on their programs. Applications exceed available positions, but a portion of the membership rotates out each year. Thus, those who cannot be accommodated remain eligible for membership the following year, provided that they renew their applications. In summary, applications include:

  • the applicant's letter of interest,
  • the applicant's resume,
  • a letter of recommendation from an existing or past Inn member (optional but helpful), and
  • a postmark or transmission date no later than May 15.

Each year's new members enrich the Inn, and we look forward to your application.
